about us
Windwalker Farm is located five miles southwest of Ottawa, Kansas. The farm consists of 98 acres of timber, pasture, ponds, and gardens with two dwellings, a cabinet shop and various barns. We have lived here for 23 years, having gladly moved from the southern suburbs of Kansas City. We are the third owners of the farm since the Native Americans had the land. The farmhouse is about 120 years old. The current occupants of it are ourselves, Jim and Joan Vibert. However at times the house has been packed with various children and their families who have come back to roost for short (and sometimes long) interludes. One granddaughter was born in the living room.
Jim is a Cabinetmaker and a sometime boat builder, although his real love is sailing - anywhere, anytime! He currently has a stable of six or seven sailboats (we lose track!), a couple of which are available for sale. Check out Jim’s website if you are interested.
Since 1995, Joan has grown organic fruits and vegetables for her CSA and then the Farmers' Community Market at Brookside. Along with daughter Kristy, Joan also sold prepared foods and honey at the market through the fall of '07. Currently Joan and Jim together are growing for a small CSA and also sell an assortment of vegetables, fruits, honey, and baked goods at the Franklin County Farmers’ Market in Ottawa, Kansas.
In late winter of '08, Joan began nutritional consulting with clients. She offers education for clients, empowering them to take greater responsibility for their own health. She has a Bachelors of Science in Holistic Nutrition.
Joan teaches cooking classes in the Cooking Studio at Whole Foods in Overland Park, Kansas and in her kitchen at the farm. Her “Artisan (and Healthy) Bread in Five Minutes a Day “ continues to be very popular and a new series focusing on Healthy Eating has began late-winter of 2010.
We are expanding our small CSA this year and are offering classes on food growing. With rising oil prices and, by consequence, rising food prices we feel ever more serious about the importance of growing our own food, not to mention the questionable practice of genetically mutilating foods to the point that the consumer has no idea what they are eating.
We believe that good, clean, healthy food is a right for all and that the best health insurance is eating right and living well. Locally grown, organic fruits and vegetables will provide the highest quality nutrients and energy. Sitting down to a meal made with foods you have known from just a seed is an incredible experience.
